Never say “no” again

Throughout my career I signed-up for “way too much”. Before I was a manager it only affected me. Shortly after I was promoted to manager, I realized every time I said “yes” to something I said “yes” for the whole team. It became clear that this was not an ideal dynamic. I HAD to learn to say “No”. Since I had habitually said “yes” my entire career, this was a HUGE effort for me. I was working with an executive coach and I asked if they could help me with it.

“Yes!” It was SO SIMPLE yet so effective. They said “How about? Replacing ‘No’, with ‘I can if…’”

Here are some examples:

“I can if we reprioritize my team’s other projects.”

“I can if we simplify the deliverables.”

“I can if we push these other two projects to the new year.”

“I can if we bring in a resource to help.”

“I can if there’s one or two people from other departments that could help us out.”

It makes so much sense… say “no” without saying “no”. I’ve used this as a way to communicate ever since. It helps with perspective and most times leads to a very productive outcome.

I realize this may not work for every situation, but it’s helped me during my career as an organizational leader and it has helped other people I have shared it with.

If you or one of your team members is overwhelmed, avoiding tough situations, or not sure where to start in bridging the gaps. I’d love to connect. Discovery Call.
