What’s the difference between Coaching, Consulting, and Therapy?
The International Coaching Federation (ICF) has strict guidelines, standards, and ethics for professional coaching practice, which can help differentiate coaching from consulting and therapy.
Coaching – In line with ICF standards, leadership coaching emphasizes a collaborative approach where the coach partners with the client in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential. Coaches adhere to a set of ethical guidelines and focus on the client’s agenda, rather than imposing their own solutions or advice.
Consulting – While distinct from coaching, consultants who are aware of ICF guidelines may incorporate coaching techniques into their practice, particularly when working with clients on leadership development or organizational change initiatives. However, consulting typically involves more direct problem-solving and expertise-driven recommendations, with consultants providing specialized knowledge and solutions to address specific business challenges.
Therapy – focuses on supporting individuals in addressing emotional and psychological issues. Unlike coaching and consulting, therapy delves into the client’s personal history and emotional experiences. The ICF guidelines strictly prohibit coaches to act in a therapeutic role. A coach or consultant will refer a client to a mental health professional when the need arises.
What do I need to do to start my coaching journey?
What are the results I can expect?
Results vary and are highly dependent on the client’s willingness and ability to ask themselves tough questions about what’s not happening for them, embrace the change that’s possible, and create a path forward that is the most meaningful and manageable. Once they have created their path forward it’s important that they have the confidence and patience to instill this in their everyday actions. See What Our Clients Say
