Lead Like a Bus Driver

Throughout my career I have experienced many ups and downs, and twists and turns. With each leadership foible, I consistently searched for just the right resources to improve. I took seminars, read books, and sought counsel from leaders I admired. I would like to share a valuable insight that helped create a clearer path.

During a break at a leadership seminar I was sharing with another attendee that I’d been struggling to feel a connection to my team. They responded, “Perhaps people can’t join you because you’re going too fast… if you don’t slow down or stop long enough, people can’t get on your bus.”

They went on to share that “Getting people on the bus is just the start — if your bus isn’t comfortable they won’t want to stay. As you make the journey, you also need to make sure their basic needs are met. Do they need food, water, a pillow… or a bathroom?”

They added that “the people on your bus may not always share with you what they truly need… and it’s your job to be observant and check in with them. Once you get to your destination, are you thanking them for helping to make it a successful journey and asking them for ways to improve the environment?”

It was through this analogy that I realized leadership is a journey that requires happy passengers… if they’re not enjoying the ride, they may get off your bus… and then you’ll be left all alone.

I’ve taken this with me throughout my career. When I’ve led people or teams, I continuously step back and visualize myself as a bus driver, asking myself these questions:

  1. Did I stop to let them on… or am I going too fast?
  2. Am I providing a pleasant environment?
  3. Am I giving them what they need to stay happy and comfortable?
  4. Am I checking-in with them to make sure they’re enjoying the ride?
  5. Finally, am I thanking them for helping to make it a successful journey and asking for input?

As I began to ask myself these questions, I realized that by slowing down and having more happy people on my bus we got a lot more done. And… we had a lot more fun!
